Chief appraiser resigns at board meeting
Anita White, Chief Appraiser of Cass County Appraisal District, resigned at last Monday’s board meeting. White was hired as Chief Appraiser in Apr. 2019 and had previously worked as an appraiser for Bowie County Appraisal District for 29 years.
White told board members that she would continue working through July 31st to certify values which are due by July 25th.
“It’s a very busy time and I do not want to run out on them already being short-staffed.”, White said. When asked for his response to White’s resignation, Scotty Bates said, “I am very pleased to know that she will be with us through July in order to complete the certification of values for our district. I understand her decision is a personal one, and I hope it is satisfying to her. I wish her the very best in her future endeavors!”
Jack Solomon said, “During her brief tenure as Chief Appraiser, Mrs. White’s work efforts have been admirable in helping to bring functionality back to the Appraisal District.”
“After a 30 year career in the industry, the Appraisal Board and I wish Mrs.White great joy and happiness in retirement and all other future pursuits.”
White was approved in February to hire a third appraiser after making numerous pleas to the board since last summer. Although the opening has been advertised, the salary approved for the position is not comparable to salaries in surrounding districts and has made it difficult to lure qualified candidates.
The position remains unfilled.
The district continues to fall behind in the absence of a third appraiser. Deputy Chief Appraiser Lacy Hicks told the board that they may only be 50-60% complete with value assessments.
The appraisal district must mail out notices of these assessments to property owners by the third week of April.
