CASS COUNTY PIONEER PROFILE Clyde Fant
This week’s Cass County Pioneer is from the political realm. Clyde Edward Fant, Sr. was born in Linden October 18, 1905. He graduated from Marshall College (now East Texas Baptist University) in 1925. After a brief stint in teaching, he worked for a lumber company and later joined Southwestern Gas and Electric Company. His career in the utility sector led him to Shreveport, where he became an executive with Interstate Electric Company. Fant’s political career began when he was appointed Shreveport’s Public Utilities Commissioner in 1944. In 1946, he was elected mayor, serving until 1954. After a four-year hiatus, during which he managed an insurance agency, he was re-elected in 1958 and served until 1970. His twenty-year tenure remains the longest in Shreveport’s history.
During his administration, Fant focused on modernizing the city. He spearheaded a $9.6 million capital improvements bond issue, which facilitated extensive municipal growth in the post-World War II era. His efforts earned Shreveport national recognition, including being named one of the nation’s top eleven cities by the National Municipal League and Look magazine in 1953. Fant’s legacy endures in Shreveport. The Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway, a scenic thoroughfare along the Red River, stands as a testament to his contributions. Additionally, the Clyde E. Fant Memorial Award for Community Service is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate exceptional civic commitment.
