Cass County to get Meals on Wheels program

CASS COUNTY, TEXAS - Senior Citizens Services of Texarkana, Inc. provides the “Meals on Wheels” program for Texarkana and the surrounding area, including Cass County.

The Cass County Commissioners Court recently approved a local grant which will qualify the Meals on Wheels program to receive non-competitive grant funding from the Texas Department of Agriculture under their Texans Feeding Texans Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program.

The program was established to help supplement and extend current home-delivered meal programs for seniors and/or disabled Texans.

Meals On Wheels delivers nutritious meals right to the door of the elderly and disabled in our area who otherwise might not have a nutritious meal to eat. Meals On Wheels is a nationwide network of community-based, non-profit programs dedicated to providing seniors in their communities with the support that enables them to remain living in their homes, where they want to be. This support is typically a nutritious meal, a friendly visit, and a quick safety check.

Meals on Wheels provides 41,570 home delivered meals in Cass County last year. During that same time period, they provided 7,192 meals at their congregate sites in Linden and Atlanta. Partnering with Cass County will allow the Meals on Wheels program to receive additional funding through the Texas Department of Agriculture to improve access and extend the program to those in need. Both programs are free; however, donations are accepted. The congregate meals are served from 11:30 to 12:30, Monday through Friday Cass County are located in Linden at 507 S.
