Attorney arrested

A longtime local lawyer was arrested at Cass County jail Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the correctional facility, , according to Courtney Shelton, district attorney.

Bryan Simmons, 49, of Atlanta, Texas was apprehended about 2 p.m. Thursday by Texas Rangers. According to reports, Simmons was allegedly smuggling methamphetamine to a client at the jail.

“We got word from the jail that this could be going on,” said Sheriff Larry Rowe.

Simmons had been under investigation for nearly one month, with the DA and Sheriff’s offices working in conjunction with the Texas Rangers. He has been practicing law in Cass and Bowie counties for about 20 years, according to his peers.

Simmons is charged with possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility, though Shelton said the case is still currently under investigation with the possibility of further charges pending.
