Atlanta, Queen City bands earn a trip to state

Several high school bands competed Saturday in the UIL area competition for 3A and 5A schools to see who goes to the state band competition in San Antionio.

Last week the two area bands Atlanta and Queen City competed in the regional contest. In the contest three judges determined if you made the overall first division.

Both Atlanta and Queen City got 1s from all three judges pushing them to the next round.

Next came the area contest, which is made up from five different regions. This year 28 bands competed. Of those, ten went to finals and the top five advanced. Of those five were Atlanta and Queen City.

In order, Mineola, Queen City, Atlanta, Redwater and White Oak will be headed to San Antonio to be competing in the state band competition.

Atlanta Band Director Keith Sanders is very excited about the chance to go back and compete, “It has been three years since we have had the opportunity to go since we dropped in classification, and we are super excited about it; a chance to represent the community.”

Sanders feels confident about the program this year. “The kids have worked hard the past several weeks, they have bought into everything.”

For Atlanta, the theme of the program is called Cross Roads. It is about the choices in the different seasons of life, educations, families and careers.

Queen City’s show theme program is Royalty. The Big Bad Band from Rabbit Land and the Band of Champions will attempt to win state Nov. 6.
