Atlanta Middle School celebrates national distinction
Students, faculty and community members gathered Friday, May 5, at Atlanta Middle School to celebrate the campus being named a Texas School to Watch.
Schools to Watch is part of a national recognition program sponsored by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform and the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
“Today, it’s all about celebrating–celebrating our teachers, celebrating our staff, and most of all, celebrating you, our students,” Atlanta Middle School Principal Colby Boyce said. “Being named a Texas School to Watch means that AMS has consistently moved to meet the criteria of high-performing middle schools, one that has made measurable gains in the academic achievement of all students over time and is committed to continuous improvement.”
Leticia Menchaca, State Director for Schools to Watch in Texas and TASSP Director for Middle-Level Services, presented a banner to the school to recognize the distinction.
“We have 63 schools across the state of Texas that have been recognized as Schools to Watch this year, and Atlanta Middle School is one of those 63,” Menchaca said. “I’m looking forward to having your administration join us in Washington, D.C., where you all will be recognized at the nation’s capitol for being one of the National Schools to Watch.”
AMS will be recognized nationally with all the other recognized STW schools nationwide at the National Forum Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C., June 22 – 24.
Atlanta Mayor James Brooks proclaimed May 5, 2023, as Atlanta Middle School Day.
“I want to congratulate Atlanta Middle School for being named a National School to Watch,” Brooks said. “Our community is so fortunate to have great schools and great leaders, and we’re proud that Atlanta ISD has a middle school that is the very best in the state.”
Superintendent Jason Harris congratulated the students, teachers and staff who contributed to making the school a model of excellence.
“As we all know, education is the foundation upon which our future is built,” Harris said. “That is why it is so important that we focus on providing our students with the best possible education, and that is exactly what happens here at Atlanta Middle School.”
