Arbor Day
Texas Arbor Day was celebrated in Linden City Park Nov. 1. Hosts were the Linden Garden Club, Texas Forest Service, Linden-Kildare FFA and the City of Linden.
Minister Kendal Hickenbottom of the Pinecreek Baptist Church gave the invocation. Linden Mayor Lynn Reynolds, Linden City Manager Lee Elliott and Texas Forest Service and Linden District resource specialist Michael Weerts each spoke welcoming the group.
Linden-Kildare student Ja’ Maiya Mack sang the National Anthem. L-K FFA members and elementary students presented readings on the appreciation of Arbor Day. The elementary students Jordan Montoya, Brenda Rodriquez, Evan Bobo and Sydney Blaylock also led in the recitation of pledges.
Texas Arbor Day is over 130 years old. Two trees from Linden Preece Farms were being readied for planting in the city park at the appropriate time, the forest service said.
Linden became a Texas Tree City USA in 2022. The requirement for this designation is to maintain a tree department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day.
City Manager Elliott credited community leader Shirley Baker for her role in putting together the Arbor Day celebration. He also mentioned the earlier work of Allie Anderson for the success of the town’s tree and park program.
