AHS Debate Team attends first meet of year

ATLANTA, TX – The Atlanta High School debate team attended its first meet of the season on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Princeton High School.

The team of senior Cademon Larson and sophomore Ivy Alfaro won third place in policy debate. Senior Manuel Olvera finished as a quarterfinalist in Lincoln Douglas debate.

Alfaro also brought back the Golden Gavel for the Top Speaker Award. Also attending the meet were juniors Autumn Cook and Emma Lanier.

“It was a tough day for the kids with long hours and several debate rounds. We left at 5 a.m. and didn’t get home until 10 p.m.,” Debate Sponsor Stuart Drake said. “For the first tournament of the year, we did well, and we learned a lot for the upcoming season.”
