AHS ‘Distinguished Alumni’ nominations now being sought
The Atlanta Education Foundation and Atlanta High School Alumni Association are still accepting nominations for Distinguished Alumni Awards and for the Distinguished Service Awards.
The awards honor former Atlanta High School (AHS) students whose achievements, strength of character and citizenship serve as models to inspire and challenge today’s students.
Anyone may submit a nomination -- only the nominees must be former AHS students. Nominations are open through Aug. 31. The nominees must have attended AHS for a minimum of three years and be at least 30 years of age. The honors may also be granted posthumously. In such instances, there is no age limit.
The Atlanta Education Foundation and Atlanta High School Alumni Association have inducted former Rabbits into the “AHS Hall of Fame” for the past five years. Some of the luminaries who have been honored are Jane Cook Barnhill, Class of 1956; Dr. Dan Nichols, Class of 1958; Edward R. Stanley, Class of 1962; Col. Robert Daniel “Danny” Barr, Class of 1964; Roger Dale Hailey, Class of 1965; Ted Thompson, Class of 1971; Lewis Lincoln, Class of 1972; Donna Kyzer Rice, Class of 1977; and posthumously, Steven Fischer Smith, Class of 1974.
The accolades will be bestowed on deserving alumni at a reception in their honor at the Atlanta Independent School District (AISD) office on a home-game Friday in October.
There will also be a special ceremony to recognize the distinguished alumni prior to the football game.
Nomination forms and further information may be obtained at the AISD office at 106 W. Main Street in Atlanta or by calling 903-796-4194.
