88 years and going strong
Linden’s Garden Club met to open its year of activities and celebrate its 88 years of existence Aug. 16. Some 19 of 21 members were present for a sack lunch and the discussion of club plans as well as to hear of town activities from Linden City Administrator Lee Elliott.
The club adopted this year’s theme as “Choose a Garden Path Filled with Flowers and Friends.”
Our goal is to adopt and contribute to community beautification projects,” said club president Shirley Baker. She pointed to the care the club gives for the flower bed at the entrance to Linden Cemetery, to Arbor Day activities for the city park and cooperative work with Texas Forestry Service and Linden -Kildare Schools with a Smokey the Bear poster contest.
“Then we also provide opportunities for members to develop advanced art and flower arranging skills,” she said.
Linden’s is the only federated garden club in Cass County. It is a member of the Texarkana, Texas, Council of Garden Clubs, the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc., and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
“This means when we pay our dues we are members of these groups and are able go to conventions and other meetings across the state and meet with other ladies of garden clubs across Texas and in other states.”
The Linden Garden Club was established in 1935 and meets at 11:30 on Wednesdays.
