Gilmer man arrested after chase
A Gilmer man is still being held in Morris County Jail after a multi-city chase on Aug. 18. Morris County Sheriff Jack Martin said Chancellor Riles Gunter, of Gilmer, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon, two counts Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
According to Sheriff Martin, deputies were dispatched out on Highway 49 near Daingerfield on reports of a man with a gun. The caller stated that the suspect had been in an argument with another person.
When a deputy arrived on-scene, the suspect, Gunter, was driving off in a big truck and pointed a gun at the deputy. The driver of the truck refused to stop and a chase begun. Gunter drove from Highway 49 into Daingerfield where officers from both Daingerfield and Lone Star joined the chase.
Officers advised Gunter pointed the gun at them and believed Gunter took a shot during the chase, which continued into Hughes Springs and Avinger before heading North on FM 155 going toward Linden. The chase came to a stop on FM 155.
Daingerfield, Lone Star, Hughes Springs and Linden Police Departments, along with DPS, Cass County Sheriff ’s Office, and Cass County District Attorney’s office all assisted in the case.
Gunter was booked in Morris County Jail, where he remains on $50,000 bond. Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant is a first-degree felony in Texas, according to Sheriff Martin. That charge is punishable by up to life in prison and a maximum $10,000 fine.
