I love propagating plant cuttings in water, particularly succulents like Jade (Shrek ears and Friendship/Money Jade) and holiday cacti. As you can see, you can up-cycle glass baby food jars or even plastic medicine measurement cups for propagating roots.

The use of water propagation

Although my favorite method for rooting and cutting is through water propagation, many prefer to stick theirs in soil to produce roots.

When using this method to produce roots, I recommend using a rooting hormone/ agent to stimulate root growth. I did an experiment last summer with rooting some Christmas cacti in soil. For some, I used Garden Safe Take Root rooting agent I purchased at a retail store.

For others I used raw honey or pure cinnamon. To use a commercial rooting hormone, you simply pour some in a bowl before wetting the end of your cutting and rolling the end in the powder before tapping off the excess and sticking the cutting in a well-draining soil.

For a more natural approach, you can dip the ends of a cutting straight in raw honey before placing it in soil, or wet the cutting and roll the end of it in ground cinnamon.

I found all three methods work well, and all my plants rooted at about the same time using all three methods.

My favorite natural way to root is using raw cinnamon, as it is said to prevent fungi and produce more stems.
