Early this Fall, when the award winning marching show, Vikings, was still coming together, a few members of the Queen City ISD staff were sitting in a meeting together discussing extracurricular activities.
QCHS Band Director, Mr. Vess, while discussing different aspects of the show, threw out a question about whether or not the QCHS Ag. Department could possibly help build some props.
Mr. Thompson accepted the challenge confident that his welding classes could help design and create Viking shields better than any that could be purchased.
Students in Design and Fabrication, Ag Mechanics, and Power Welding classes under Mr. Thompson’s guidance quickly began designing exactly what Mr. Vess had envisioned for this year’s show.
Durability, transportability, and how the shield covers would attach all had to be considered during the initial design process.
Students then spent several weeks cutting, welding, and painting the 9-foot shields. While challenging, putting skills taught in the classroom to practical use while assisting another group within the school proved to be a win for everyone involved.
The BOC got their props, and the QCHS welding classes got the satisfaction of a job well done and seeing their handiwork help bring home a Bronze Medal to QCHS.
