TEXAS HISTORY MINUTE

“There’s no such thing as failure; there’s just giving up too soon,” once said Dr. Jonas Salk. In the early twentieth century, polio devastated many communities around the world, including Texas, prompting closures and quarantines connected to outbreaks, gripping communities in terror. One determined team of scientists led by Salk ended this nightmare for the nation and the world with the development of a polio vaccine.

At the beginning of April, all Americans will be aske to participate in a special event that takes places once every ten years: the census. The nation will be examinin and tabulating the sizes and conditions of each American household as it existed on April 1. Questions will b asked about age, occupation, number of children, education levels, wages, ethnicity, home ownership, veteran status, and languages spoken at home. For the first time Americans will also be able to complete the census online. The census, required by the Constitution, is part o a tradition dating back many centuries around the world
