Tale of the Tail Twister
A few weeks ago, we received a letter to the editor inquiring about the role of a Tail Twister or more importantly, what is a Tail Twister?
In Lions Clubs International, a “Tail Twister” is a unique and spirited position designed to promote fun, fellowship and enthusiasm during club meetings.
Often considered the morale booster of the group, the Tail Twister plays an important part in keeping meetings lively and engaging.
Having attended the Atlanta Lions Club meetings before I can attest to that.
Tail Twisters keep everyone on their toes. This is often done through humorous fines and jokes.
Members may be fined for arriving late, forgetting to wear their Lions pin and/or vest, or simply for fun, with the proceeds usually supporting the club’s charitable fund.
One important item a Tail Twister uses is a “tail twisting receptacle” or similar container to collect fines. Most of the time the receptacle is in the shape of a lion.
Lion Stuart Smith does a fantastic job as Tail Twister at the Atlanta Lions Club meetings.
During my few months as a member of the local Lions Club I’ve witnessed fines from vests absences to cell phone interference to the dreaded necktie clipping.
I don’t wear ties but if I did, they’d be made of paper mâché or twine.
A Tail Twisters’ role encourages laughter and camaraderie; it is never intended to offend or single out members unfairly.
The objective is to foster unity, break the monotony of routine meetings and create a welcoming atmosphere that keeps members engaged.
The tail twister position is an important part of Lions Club culture. It serves as a reminder that service and fellowship go hand in hand. The energy and personality a tail twister brings can greatly influence club dynamics and member participation.
Each Lions Club may customize the tail twister’s role to suit its traditions, but the underlying mission remains the same: to bring joy, maintain a sense of humor, and strengthen the bonds between members.
That I can say is a fact as both Lions Clubs I attend have a solid sense of unity and a great deal of humor.
Although the title may sound unusual, the Tail Twister is a valued part of Lions Clubs culture. By blending fun with purpose, this role helps keep meetings enjoyable while reinforcing the club’s mission of service and fellowship.
