McNoble Harper
This week’s Cass County Pioneer is McNoble Harper. He was born on August 1, 1906, in Marietta, Texas. Though he began high school at New Zion School in Bivins, he finished at Pemberton High School in Marshall, Texas. After graduation, Harper earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Prairie View A&M University. Upon attaining his degrees, Harper returned to Cass County and began teaching and coaching basketball at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta.
Harper was a respected and knowledgeable teacher in the agricultural department. He founded a local chapter of the New Farmers of America, which aided in teaching young African Americans about agriculture and farming. Harper was most fond of taking his students on field trips to local working farms and ranches to allow the students to get hands-on experience in a real-world setting. Harper had a profound impact on the education of African American children in Cass County. Though he passed away on February 26, 1980, Harper’s legacy lives on in his former students and athletes, as well as in a park named in his honor. In 1990, the City of Atlanta dedicated The McNoble Harper Park in his honor. The park is located at the corner of Hodge and Melrose Streets in Atlanta near the old Booker T. Washington school. The dedication of McNoble Harper Park serves as a testament to his enduring influence on the community of Atlanta, Texas. Through this park, his commitment to education and community service continues to be honored and remembered.
