John William Wright Patman

This week’s Cass County Pioneer Profile is about John William Wright Patman. A Cass County native who achieved great political success. He was born in Hughes Springs, Texas on August 6, 1893. He attended Hughes Springs High School, then went on to Cumberland University for law school in Tennessee. During World War 1, Patman served in the United States Army then later, in the Texas National Guard, where he served for several years after the war ended. After earning his law degree, Patman returned to Cass County, where he became the assistant county attorney. In 1920, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives and remained for two terms. Patman was only beginning his political career. Next, he was elected District Attorney of the Fifth Judicial District. After four years in that position, Patman moved on to the national political stage when he was elected to represent the First Texas Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

The beginning of Patman’s time in the House of Representatives was marked by the Great Depression. He frequently criticized President Hoover’s policies. Most notably, Patman authored a bill which strongly supported veterans of WWI during the devastating economic downfall. Patman remained in office through the Roosevelt, Truman, and Kennedy administrations, and supported many of their economic policies.

Patman represented the constituents of his district for twenty-four terms, until his death, on March 7, 1976. To honor Patman’s legacy of service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers renamed the Texarkana Reservoir to Lake Wright Patman in 1973.
