Financial Assistance Grant

Through funding from the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), this program provides limited emergency financial relief to eligible veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses who demonstrate need. Assistance may cover mortgage, rent, and utilities. Since July 1st, we’ve helped 73 households, delivering over $80,000 in support to veterans, surviving spouses, and their families.

Housing for Texas Heroes

This program helps low-income veteran and surviving spouse homeowners with critical home modifications, repairs, and weatherization projects. These improvements increase accessibility, correct safety hazards, and protect homes from the elements. To date, we’ve completed three projects (including painting/repairs, an air-conditioning replacement, and a roof repair), with two more scheduled this week and two additional projects awaiting contractor bids.

CASS COUNTY PIONEER PROFILE

This week’s Cass County Pioneer is Dr. M.D.K. Taylor. Born on October 13, 1818, Dr. Marion Dekalb “M.D.K” Taylor was a doctor and politician from Jones County, Georgia. In 1842, Dr. Taylor was elected to the Alabama legislature, where he advocated for the United States’ annexation of Texas. In 1847, Dr. Taylor left Alabama and moved to Cass County, Texas, where he quickly became involved in local community causes. For instance, Dr. Taylor was an incorporator of Sharon Union School in 1853. He was elected to the Texas Legislature, where he represented Cass County for twenty-four years, both in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Dr. Taylor also served as the Speaker of the House during the eighth and tenth legislatures. His Texas Historical Commission marker sits on Highway 59, near the Taylor family cemetery, which is in Marion County, near Jefferson.
