CASS COUNTY PIONEER PROFILE

This week’s Cass County Pioneer comes to us from the military. Brigadier General Kelley Arnold was born in Atlanta, Texas on December 10, 1910. Arnold embarked on his military journey in October 1925 as an enlisted soldier in his hometown. After fifteen years of dedicated service in the enlisted ranks, he was com- missioned as a second lieutenant in the Infantry on November 25, 1940. During World War II, he served with the 144th Infantry Regiment of the 36th Infantry Division, undertaking various roles such as communications officer, headquarters company executive officer, personnel officer, and regimental S1 and S2. He left active duty in February 1946.

With the organization of the Texas National Guard’s 49th Armored Division in 1947, Arnold joined its ranks, initially serving as Division Adjutant General and G1. In July 1961, he was appointed Chief of Staff, a position he held during the division’s federal activation at Fort Polk, Louisiana, from October 1961 to August 1962, in response to the Berlin Crisis. His exemplary service led to his promotion to Colonel on September 25, 1961. In October 1965, Arnold was appointed Assistant Division Commander of the 49th Armored Division, reflecting his significant contributions and leadership within the unit. After a commendable military career spanning forty-five years, Arnold retired from the Texas National Guard in May 1970. In recognition of his service, he was appointed a brevet major general in the Texas Army National Guard upon retirement. General Arnold died on April 5, 2003 at age 92 and was interred at Pine Crest Cemetery in Atlanta, Texas. His legacy is preserved through his contributions to the Texas National Guard and his leadership during pivotal moments in the 49th Armored Division’s history.
